Our Philosophy

The Very Magnetic Clock Company® and Longrie dot Com LLC are dedicated to bringing you beautiful antique timepieces that are faithful reproductions of actual chronometers and watches. Please keep in mind that these are pictures of actual timepieces rather than artificial creations. In reproducing them here we strive for historical and technical balance realizing that screen size, storage space, and overall performance limitations of a mobile device require certain trade-offs to be made in order to provide such a large variety of clocks. We also choose not to Photoshop away the centuries of ownership and use that we feel gives these clocks their character and realism. All images on this page are taken from the actual clocks as they are displayed within the application.

60 Classic Clocks and Pocket Watches for Your iPhone & iPod Touch

Developed in conjunction with Mike Stran of the Very Magnetic Clock Company® the Timepieces application turns your iPhone or iPod touch into beautiful desktop clocks re-creating look and feel of 60 different antique time keeping instruments. Designed and implemented with a strict attention to detail this application pays homage to the watch and clock makers of the past who constructed these intricate analog mechanisms and designed their aesthetic faces and cases.

A Whole Collection - In Your Pocket and On Your Desk

Within the 60 different clocks provided in Timepieces 3.0 you will find automotive clocks, world war II era aviation clocks, ships chronometers, and many different kinds of pocket watches. Run Timepieces while your iPhone or iPod Touch is in its charger to turn it into a wonderful desk accessory. If you've recently upgraded to a new iPhone 3GS this is a great way to get some use from your last-gen device.

The application can be configured to automatically display different clocks over periods of time ranging from 1 minute to 1 day. The automatic switching can be done among all clocks within the application or only among those that you've tagged as favorites.

Additionally, the auto-dim functionality of your device can be disabled to prevent the screen from dimming and locking while Timepieces is running.

Real Clocks, Real Functions
Each clock and pocket watch within Timepieces is an excellent simulation of the fine artistry and craftsmanship that went into its physical counterpart. As in the real world each clock provides a different set of features and functions. Naturally all will tell you the current time. However, some of the special features that you will find among the clocks within the Timepieces application include:

► Complications such as day of the week, day of the month, and month dials. All are functional, not just static images.

► Display of the current phase of the moon. Take a look out the window (at night of course) and you'll see that the clocks in Timepieces with moon-phase indicators will match what you see up in the sky.

► Stopwatch/timer functions. One chronograph even includes a split-seconds function.

► Power strength indicators to help the owner remember when the clock or watch needs to be wound. Within Timepieces these complications reflect your device's battery charge; the modern day equivalent of a tightened spring.

►Alarm clocks with a mechanical ringing bell.

► Even an animated windmill!

Thanks to feedback from horological enthusiasts the animation and movement of the hands on all clocks has been finely tuned to best represent their real world counterparts. The second hands on electrically powered desk and wall clocks have a completely smooth motion while the pocket watches and other mechanically operated clocks move in a ticking fashion that is barely perceptible but definitely present.

More than Just Skins

Complications

Watch makers call them "complications." These are the extras on various watches and clocks. Features such as day, date, month dials, moon phase indicators, animated components, chronograph/stop watch, and winding strength indicator features are implemented, when a part of the original watch or clock, within their representation within the Timepieces application. All are functional; not just static images.

Battery Status

On clocks with winding strength indicator complications the position of this hand reflects the modern-day analog of a wound clock spring. As your device's battery charge is used up the winding strength indicators will move from their full to empty positions. Instead of showing how soon your watch needs winding they now reflect how soon your iPhone or Ipod Touch needs charging.

Interesting is that, due to the longer range of movement, the winding strength indicators on the Timepieces clocks actually provide a more easily read and more accurate display of battery status than the actual battery indicator within the iPhone status bar.

Alarms
Two of the desk clocks, Basic Bakelite and JAZ Deco, include an alarm function. Buttons on the clock allow the alarm to be turned on or off with the current status represented by a small bell icon in the bottom right corner of the screen. Tapping this icon also allows for the alarm's time to be set. Just like on the real clock, the alarm hand will rotate to reflect the time at which the alarm is set

Additional Special Features
Be sure to check out these additional features of certain clocks and watches within Timepieces:

MIG, Lemania Chronograph, Royal Air Force, Sector Timer, and Swiss Chronograph each include a stopwatch function. Tap their stopwatch buttons (highlighted when the iPhone status bar is displayed) to start, stop, and reset. Lemania Chronograph's stopwatch includes an additional button for control over it's split seconds hand. Tap this additional button to stop this hand, tap again to catch it up with the current time.

The Cigarillos Excelsior model features a unique mechanism with a single minute hand that moves through 180, rather than 360, degrees of movement. Wait for the top of the hour to see it animate back to 0 and the new hour digit rotate into position.

Windmill Verge features a smoothly animating windmill. Before the era of TV or even silent film these sorts of animations in pocket watches provided the same type of entertainment that our iPhone's and iPod Touches do today.

The date indicator on the contemporary (as in early 20th century contemporary) Semi-Digital wristwatch smoothly rotates into position. However, you'll need to stay up until midnight to see it happen!

The second hand of the Diehl Rocket clock is a tiny little Buck Rogers style rocket ship that smoothly orbits the earth once each second.

Basic Bakelite includes a Telechron style disc that rotates from red to black when this clock is selected as though someone had reset it's time after a power failure.

Designed by DeVaulchier & Blow it won a Kaufmann Award in the 1935 Industrial Arts Exposition.	Early 20th century Waltham with winding strength indicator in a beautiful engraved case.	Straight forward bakelite alarm clock. Telechron style red indicator will change to white shortly after being selected as though the clock has been reset after a power failure. Includes alarm function.

Gorgeous green marble and chrome finish on this Catalyn crafted clock from the 1920's.	1950's space race inspired clock manufactured by Diehl in West Germany. Second hand as rocket ship smoothly orbits the Earth once every minute.	Classic olive deco-style wall clock from Hammond.	1930's desk clock with alarm from French clock maker JAZ. Includes alarm function.
	Lackner Neon Glo	Stepped Waltham

	Manufactured by Lackner in the 1930's and 1940's. Internally lit swirl effects were produced using a then-new material known as Catalyn™. Originally white, this one has aged into a beautiful butterscotch color.	Waltham 8 Day desktop clock mounted on a stepped chrome base.

Late 19th century Swiss watch with bold roman numerals in a buffed silver case. Timeless simplicity.	Late nineteenth century. The ideal accessory when showing up for a poker game at your local saloon.	Unusual square cased Swiss pocket watch. The back would open up to form an easel stand to also serve as a nightstand clock.	1930's Lemania with tenth second accuracy and split seconds chronograph.
	National Railroad	Sector Timer

	Manufactured by the Elgin National Watch Company around 1910. Features individually numbered minutes to assist with reading train timetables.	Circa 1890 this pocket watch features a chronograph with ½ second resolution.

Swiss eight day lever with power reserve indication made for travel or car clock. White enamel dial with subsidiary at six for power reserve. Features arabic numbers and luminous hands. Required winding every 8 hours.	Waltham 8 Day automotive clock.	Cold-War era Soviet helicopter clock with red push-button "mission" timer which serves as a stop watch in our application.	Word War I era aviation clock. It has an 8 day movement and would have been key wound from the front.
